Suppose you've already defined the urban massing and program distribution in your project, and now you're beginning to develop the facade. Your goal is to first explore the composition and potential aesthetic and material directions. For this, you want to examine span, openings, and cladding possibilities.

- Modular Facade Opening -

2024, Self-commissioned

Approach

Our experience shows that the best results can be achieved intuitively. For each desired span, we use our modular facade tool to set up various opening compositions, accounting for doors or windows. We define various sets of settings that we wish to test for the structure, openings, and cladding. In this case, the defined input controls result in a total of 96 facade combinations.

Data

For each facade variant, we have data available, such as the window-to-wall ratio, the total volume of structural elements, or the total quantity of external cladding elements. We are able to compare options, analyze, and draw conclusions, such as which option would lead to the lowest amount of modules while maintaining a specific window-to-wall ratio.

Module Outside

The aesthetic composition of the outside facade module varies according to our defined settings. The structural settings allow the structural frame (in grey) to be positioned inside, in-between the wall layers, or outside. The opening settings allow the windowsill to be positioned inside or outside, creating very distinct visual results. In this facade study, two cladding types were explored: slats and panels. For each, three sets of pre-defined settings were created, for example, to compare the thickness and spacing of the wooden slats or the size of panels.

Module Inside

The inside of the module was left bland and is a result of the outside-oriented settings. It is important to note that the inner paneling grid of the modular elements is according to the defined opening composition and its length sequence. One could also add an inner cladding option to the parametric framework, add a PV study to the outside paneling option, add a daylight analysis to the respective inner spaces, or even a CO2 analysis. Facade studies are a vital element of an integral study. Applied early on, such approaches can systematically provide more understanding and better reasoning for more optimal technical and aesthetic design decisions for your project.
